According to the City of Mississauga, Standard and Poor Global Ratings again awarded the City a AAA credit rating on October 8, 2026. AAA is the highest rating the agency gives. The City said this is the twenty-third consecutive year it has received that designation, with a stable outlook.
The City summarized the rating agency view as recognition of strong financial management and responsible budgeting. It said Mississauga remains in a strong financial position while planning for growth and new municipal responsibilities. Those responsibilities include services moving from Peel Region in 2027, including waste collection and regional roads. The City said the rating report treated those changes as expected to be revenue neutral.
What supports the rating
The City pointed to careful management of revenues and spending, a diversified economy and a resilient property tax base. It also cited strong household incomes and an ability to attract business investment in manufacturing, life sciences and technology, even while trade pressure affects investment across Canada. Mississauga location advantages in the summary include the country busiest airport, two national railways and five major highways.
A credit rating is not a household budget score and it does not set a tax rate. It is an outside assessment used in financial markets when a city borrows. A stronger rating can support confidence that the city can manage debt and reserves while paying for infrastructure renewal, housing growth and daily services.
What residents should watch next
The City said the agency expects Mississauga to manage budget and property tax increases responsibly and to keep reserve balances above ten per cent of annual operating revenue. Those are projections in a rating summary, not guarantees. Residents will see the real test in future budgets: service levels, capital plans, tax changes and the cost of taking on Peel services in 2027.

What it means for residents
For Mississauga residents, the AAA rating is a sign of borrowing strength, not a promise about taxes: its value will show up if the City can fund roads, waste transition and growth projects while keeping reserves and property-tax increases under control.
