The Town of Newmarket has announced that its seasonal winter parking restrictions will be in effect from November 1, 2026, until April 15, 2027. Under these longstanding regulations, vehicles are prohibited from parking on town streets overnight between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Municipal parking enforcement officers will enforce these rules regardless of whether it is actively snowing, and motorists found in violation will face a $100 fine. Year-round parking regulations also continue to apply throughout the community.
According to the town, the overnight street parking ban is implemented each winter to maintain road safety, keep streets easy to navigate, and allow municipal operations to clear snow effectively. Over the past two seasons, Newmarket responded to a high volume of snow events, emphasizing the need to keep roadways free of parked vehicles. Keeping curbs clear enhances overall driver visibility, supports nighttime plowing operations, and ensures emergency responders can reach their destinations without delay.
To accommodate drivers who need parking options during the restriction hours, the Town of Newmarket provides access to its Off-Street Parking Program. First introduced in 2020 to offer flexibility and safe options, the program allows all residents to apply for and receive a free temporary digital parking permit through the municipal parking portal at parking.newmarket.ca. Applicants must submit their vehicle information online. The town issues permits electronically, eliminating the need to print or display a physical permit on the dashboard.
With a valid permit, motorists may park overnight from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning in designated, sign-marked spaces across seven municipal properties. Vehicles must be moved by 7 a.m. each day to make space for regular daytime visitors and allow for daytime snow clearing. The permitted locations are the Municipal Offices at 395 Mulock Drive, Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Drive, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle Street, Downtown Newmarket P3 Parking Lot on Doug Duncan Drive, Bonshaw Park at 130 Bonshaw Avenue, George Richardson Park at 395 Bayview Parkway, and Armstrong Family Park at 860 Joe Persechini Drive.
Town officials note that these free lot permits are intended for residents hosting overnight guests, holding gatherings, or leaving a vehicle parked downtown following a dinner on Main Street. Permit exemptions and further details are available at newmarket.ca/parkingexemptions, and residents can contact customer service at 905-895-5193 or info@newmarket.ca.

What it means for residents
For residents across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area who travel into Newmarket, the seasonal restrictions require careful overnight planning. While street parking may be routine during the warmer months, leaving a vehicle parked on any town road between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. carries an automatic $100 fine even when skies are clear. GTA motorists visiting friends or family in Newmarket, or patrons dining along historic Main Street who decide to leave their cars behind, should take advantage of the free digital off-street permits before parking overnight. The designated lots at facilities like the Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, and the P3 downtown lot offer secure, legal alternatives. However, drivers commuting back to other parts of the GTA must ensure their vehicles are moved promptly by 7 a.m. to avoid daytime parking infractions and allow snow maintenance crews to complete their rounds.
