The Town of Newmarket announced that it has achieved a perfect drinking water inspection score from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for the sixth consecutive year. This announcement was made in celebration of Water and Waste Water and Stormwater Operators Appreciation Day on October 23.

Mayor John Taylor congratulated the Water and Waste Water Services unit, highlighting the dedication and expertise of the staff. He noted that these professionals work continuously, in all seasons and weather conditions, to ensure the community has access to safe, high-quality drinking water. They also manage wastewater and stormwater systems to protect the environment. Mayor Taylor described earning a perfect inspection score for six consecutive years as an extraordinary milestone that meets the high standards set by the province for all municipalities, expressing pride in the team's commitment to the community.

Newmarket's water quality is regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 (SDWA). The town has developed an operational plan to meet the legislative requirements of this act, which includes a framework for a Quality Management System (QMS) tailored to the town's drinking water system. The annual MECP inspection assesses municipal drinking water systems to ensure compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act. A score of 100 percent is the highest possible rating, indicating full compliance with all applicable requirements.

Beyond meeting provincial and environmental requirements and conducting routine water testing, the Town also implements various water maintenance programs. These programs include watermain flushing and swabbing, as well as the maintenance of water meters and fire hydrants. The staff also performs water main repairs. Furthermore, they are responsible for managing water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure to safeguard the environment and prevent flooding.

Water and Waste Water and Stormwater Operators Appreciation Day, observed annually on October 23 as declared by the Ontario Municipal Water Association, recognizes the essential work of operators who manage drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure around the clock, every day of the year.
