Davis Drive between Main Street and Prospect Street will be closed to traffic to allow Metrolinx to carry out railway crossing rehabilitation work, according to an advisory from the Town of Newmarket. The construction is being led by Metrolinx as part of its ongoing state of good repair maintenance program. The closure begins at 9 p.m. on Friday, November 13, and is scheduled to end at 6 a.m. on Monday, November 18, subject to weather conditions.
Travellers moving through central Newmarket will face several access limits while the maintenance takes place. Westbound vehicle access will be maintained only up to The Tannery Mall and the Newmarket GO Station at 465 Davis Drive, as well as the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place at 474 Davis Drive. For eastbound traffic, vehicle access will remain open up to Superior Street. While local access to individual properties inside the closure boundaries will be accommodated, there will be no through access permitted across the railway crossing itself.
Signage will be deployed throughout the area to direct motorists and pedestrians around the construction zone, and alternate detour routes are available. The work will also affect regional public transit operations. York Region Transit (YRT) routes serving the corridor will be placed on detours, with riders instructed to check yrt.ca to plan their trips. Additionally, GO Transit services may experience disruptions during the work window, and passengers are advised to review gotransit.com/schedules prior to travelling.
Residents and commuters seeking further information or holding questions regarding the railway crossing repairs can contact Metrolinx York Region via email at YorkRegion@metrolinx.com or review project updates online at metrolinx.com/Barrie.

What it means for residents
For commuters, residents, and businesses across York Region and northern parts of the Greater Toronto Area, this closure affects a critical east-west corridor in Newmarket. Drivers accustomed to traversing Davis Drive to reach regional hospitals, commercial hubs, or Highway 404 will need to budget extra travel time and use alternative east-west routes. Commuters relying on the Barrie GO corridor and the Newmarket GO Station, situated right at the edge of the closure zone at 465 Davis Drive, must check schedules in advance, as connecting YRT bus routes will be actively detoured around the railway crossing tracks. Visitors to local community hubs like The Tannery Mall and the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place will still be able to enter from the west, but anyone attempting to cross between Main and Prospect will have to bypass the area entirely.
