The City of Richmond Hill has been granted $1,095,000 in funding from the Government of Ontario for the South Richvale Valleyland Sewer Protection Project. This financial support is designated to protect and improve water systems within the South Richvale Valleyland, specifically along Patterson Creek, situated south of Carrville Road and east of Bathurst Street.
The project aims to stabilize the creek banks, a measure intended to prevent further erosion and enhance the waterway's capacity to manage extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall. A primary objective of this investment is to protect underground sanitary sewers from exposure due to erosion. This proactive step is expected to reduce the risk of cracked or damaged pipes, which could potentially lead to leaks into the creek. Additionally, the work is projected to reduce sediment levels in the creek, thereby fostering a better habitat for aquatic species, including the endangered Redside Dace fish.
The funding originates from the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program's (MHIP) Health and Safety Water Stream. This program allocates over $875 million to assist municipalities and First Nations in building, expanding, and rehabilitating aging water, wastewater, stormwater, and flood control infrastructure. The broader goal is to preserve the existing housing supply and provide protection against extreme weather events.
Mayor David West expressed gratitude for the funding, stating it will improve critical sanitary sewer systems and help protect community health and safety, as well as the environment. He emphasized the city's strong asset management program, which focuses on cost-effective infrastructure maintenance through timely investments. Ontario's Minister of Infrastructure, David Piccini, highlighted the government's record investments in local infrastructure, noting that this particular investment in Richmond Hill will improve water systems for approximately 6,500 existing homes through the $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.
Daisy Wai, MPP for Richmond Hill, underscored the importance of maintaining water infrastructure for public health and ensuring essential services. Michael Parsa, MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, reiterated the government's support for the project, which he believes will strengthen water systems for residents. Patterson Creek is part of the larger Don River watershed, which flows south to Lake Ontario. This project is designed to protect key infrastructure, including a sanitary sewer pipe, a York Region sanitary trunk sewer, stormwater outlets, and a local pedestrian trail. Streambank erosion along Patterson Creek has been identified as a risk to underground sanitary sewers, potentially causing pipe failure and sewage discharge into the environment. The city is collaborating with York Region, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and the Government of Ontario on this project. The South Richvale Valleyland Sewer Protection Project, with an estimated total cost of $1.5 million, is a combined environmental and infrastructure initiative. Construction is currently underway and is anticipated to be completed by October 2026, with ground restoration plantings extending into 2027.

What it means for residents
For residents of the Greater Toronto Area, particularly those in Richmond Hill, this provincial funding signifies a direct investment in local environmental health and infrastructure resilience. The South Richvale Valleyland Sewer Protection Project along Patterson Creek will mitigate the risk of sewage leaks, which could otherwise impact local water quality and public health. By stabilizing creek banks and reducing erosion, the project also safeguards the natural habitat for aquatic species like the endangered Redside Dace fish, contributing to regional biodiversity efforts. Furthermore, the improvements to stormwater management will help protect homes and properties from the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, a growing concern across the GTA. This initiative ensures that essential services remain reliable and the local environment is preserved for future generations, directly benefiting the quality of life for Richmond Hill residents.
